WEDDING INSURANCE
We are in Virginia and if you're from VA as well, you know hurricane Florence is in our midst. Couples getting married next weekend are PANICKING. Everywhere on local wedding forums brides are asking "what do I do if the hurricane hits?!"
So lets address that first- if your wedding has to be cancelled/postponed due to weather what can you do?
First- read your contracts. A lot of vendors state an "act of god" clause in their contract and address what happens. For us, we will work with you on rescheduling and if we have the date available we will work with you. If a vendor does not address this in their contract, you should be concerned. Realize you may be taking a loss depending on contract circumstances and vendor availability.
Second- try not to panic. If you are getting married in a week and the weather isn't looking great, relax, you still have a few days.
BUT TO AVOID HEADACHES....
get event insurance. For the sake of this post i will call it "wedding insurance." It is an insurance policy that covers your wedding day. If you are serving alcohol, you need at least liability insurance. If GOD FORBID, cousin Billy gets too drunk and drives and hits another vehicle, YOU could be liable, get insurance. Your venue may even REQUIRE liability insurance. However, liability insurance will not help you if a hurricane blows your wedding day.
You need cancellation coverage. Many event insurance policies will cover weather related cancellations, as well as canceling due to illness or death (God forbid). Wedsafe also has a policy that offers change of heart coverage- which we hope doesn't happen but that would be one less thing to deal with if you do decide to call it quits.
Generally, you can get "wedding insurance" through whoever provides your homeowners or renters insurance. There are also websites like WedSafe that are dedicated to providing insurance for weddings. Policies are usually over $200 but less than $500. They vary depending on different aspects of your day.
Weddings these days cost more than a car. You need to insure your investment. It is far better to have the policy and not need it than to need it and not have it.
